Free Tax Clinics: Bridging the Gap for Modest Income Households in Perth-Huron

It’s tax season, and while many people handle their own taxes or hire professionals, access to tax services remains inequitable. United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH)’s Social Research and Planning Council (SRPC) is highlighting a service working to change that.

“Ten to 12 per cent of Canadians don’t file their taxes,” says Kristin Crane, UWPH Director of Community Impact and Research. Modest income households, especially those with children, are particularly affected. Without filing taxes, they miss out on refunds and benefits they are entitled to. Local volunteer tax clinics play a vital role in addressing this gap.

Free clinics are available for seniors, newcomers, students, and those receiving income from social assistance programs. In 2024 alone, volunteers at free tax clinics in Huron County and Grand Bend filed over 1,000 returns, resulting in $1.8 million in returns and benefits.

“These clinics have been a real success story, and we want to use UWPH’s profile to raise awareness,” adds Crane. “We encourage anyone who doesn’t normally file taxes, or who may meet the criteria, to use this service.”

To find the nearest tax clinic, dial 2-1-1 or visit 211ontario.ca. If you are owed money, you can file taxes at any time of year. It isn’t too late. Some tax clinics can even help file taxes at any time during the year.

Call to Action: Significant portions of Perth County and Stratford need volunteers to start clinics in underserved areas. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering with the tax clinics in various roles, please contact taxclinics@perthhuron.unitedway.ca.
