United Way kicks off in North Perth

United Way Perth-Huron launched their 2021-22 campaign with an ambitious goal of $2,002,061 and a commitment to continue working hard to address #UNIGNORABLE issues such as poverty, mental health and homelessness in the North Perth community.

“We’re glad to have the campaign officially underway,” said Shelley Blackmore, United Way Perth-Huron North Perth Community Committee chair. “It’s great to see how North Perth continues to pull together to support United Way through these challenging times and we can’t wait to get out there and safely connect with our community.”

As part of kick-off celebrations in Listowel, United Way invited local workplaces to “Unite for a Bite” by ordering take-out lunch for staff from participating restaurants including the Atwood Café Restaurant, Joanne’s Homestyle Catering, Diana Sweets, The Kitchen Cupboard, Veky’s and Roadhouse 23. In total, over 650 meals were ordered, with five dollars from each meal purchased going to United Way. Three workplaces also bought meals and donated them to local vulnerable people, school lunch programs and front-line workers. North Perth kick-off sponsor Ward & Uptigrove also held a food truck lunch in their parking lot featuring Berlin 95 Mobile Hot Spot for German Food and the Funnelcloud food truck, along with coffee from Tim Horton’s. In addition, Dairy Queen Listowel ran a “top up your order with a toonie” promotion on Friday. Customer donations were matched by Dairy Queen and donated to the UWPH campaign. Domino’s Pizza in Listowel also donated $1 per pizza sold, Friday through Sunday, to the campaign.

Part of United Way’s work in the North Perth community includes a new project called Hope Links, in partnership with the Salvation Army and the owners of the former Anglican church on Main Street. Homelessness has become more visible locally, sparking a deeper look into needed resources. Hope Links allows people to access multiple services in a supportive and welcoming environment, eat nutritious food and connect socially and emotionally. By creating a community-centred place to connect, Hope Links aims to build a supportive network for participants and help them build a brighter future.

“Hope Links is an important project for vulnerable people in North Perth and we’re looking forward to working with local supporters and our partners to make this a reality,” added United Way Perth-Huron Executive Director Ryan Erb. “
