United Way Perth-Huron is joining with other United Ways across Canada to call attention to the growing financial anxiety in our communities.
Research led by United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) has shown that financial anxiety is quickly deepening across Canada, increasing to 60% – a five-point jump — between September 2025 and April 2026. This increase is driven by the rising cost of everyday essentials such as food, housing and energy. Nearly half of all people in Canada (46%) are one paycheck away from debt and can cover basic expenses for only one month or less, up 4 points from September. 27% say their situation has worsened in that time.
In addition to reflecting serious household budget challenges, financial anxiety has ripple effects across health, housing, work, learning and community well-being. 40% of Canadians report difficulty sleeping due to financial stress, and 34% say it has made it harder to concentrate at work or school.
UWCC’s 2026 federal pre-budget submission highlights how targeted investments can help meet basic needs and strengthen the social safety net. United Way Perth-Huron calls upon the federal government to commit to UWCC’s recommendations:
- Investing in the community services sector (community mental health, housing programs, food security, family violence supports) and its workforce to help meet growing community needs.
- Investing in 211 community navigation services so low-income people and displaced workers can find the supports and services they need.
- Boosting the Canada Child Benefit for families and Canada Housing Benefits while renters wait for affordable units.
