Northern Huron Connection Centre takes shape

United Way Perth-Huron is sharing more about the organization’s planned new Northern Huron Connection Centre serving North Huron, Howick and Morris-Turnberry.

“We’re excited to let the community know more about this project,” said United Way Perth-Huron Executive Director Ryan Erb. “Having a physical space to help address pressing local issues such as chronic homelessness and social isolation is extremely important. With the Northern Huron Connection Centre, United Way has an opportunity to make a positive, long-lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable local people.”

“Choices for Change is very happy to be involved with the connection centre project,” added Choices for Change Executive Director Catherine Hardman. “We recently helped open this type of centre in Stratford and are very pleased with the early results. Vulnerable people need support, and by collaborating with other agencies we can help ensure people get the help they need to begin or continue their healing journey and rebuild their lives.”

To be located in Wingham, United Way’s Northern Huron Connection Centre is intended as a welcoming, safe space for the community’s most vulnerable citizens to rest, access basic needs, healthcare services, identification assistance and more. Partnerships with agencies — including Choices for Change, the organization proposed to operate the centre — mean those using the centre can access important services and supports under one roof.

As part of fundraising efforts for this important project, UWPH is bringing the Coldest Night of the Year walk to Wingham. Supporting those experiencing hunger, hurt and homelessness in the community, this year’s event includes a COVID-safe, outdoor event on Saturday, February 26, 2022 and a virtual option to walk any time, any distance during the week of February 21–28. All participants raising $150 and over — $75 and over for youth under 18 — receive Coldest Night toques. “The Northern Huron Connection Centre is a tremendous step forward in local efforts to ensure vulnerable people get the help they need,” added Manager Community Development, Northern Huron & Area, Lisa Harper. “To make this project possible, we are looking to raise $43,768 in addition to our Coldest Night goal of $35,500. We people across North Huron, Howick and Morris-Turnberry to join us in supporting this initiative. However you give, know that your generosity helps build a stronger local community.”
