Because of the pandemic social isolation is top of mind for many right now, but the Town of St. Marys already approached United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH) back in March to help address this pressing local challenge.
“Community members in St. Marys reached out for help. There were issues around social isolation, a perception of living in an unsafe environment and conflict between neighbours. Knowing it was a multi-faceted social challenge, we brought in UWPH to guide us to a solution,” explained Mayor Al Strathdee. “COVID-19 slowed the process down, but after consulting with community experts and examining the challenge from many different perspectives, I believe we have a long-term plan to support our community members, especially those living in and around social housing.”
Between March and October of this year, UWPH led five meetings with community organizations such as Stratford Police, Family Services Perth-Huron, the Social Services Manager, Hospital, Family Health Team, Choices for Change and St. Marys Community Living. As a result a pilot program is expected to begin soon, operated by Family Services Perth-Huron to focus on community development and tenant support.
“The Community Developer and Support Worker (CDSW) will support tenants, work to understand their challenges and connect them with services,” explained UWPH Executive Director Ryan Erb. “The CDSW will also develop stronger community networks and devote time to education around safety, homelessness, poverty and other social issues. Down the road, you can expect community events that build bridges among residents who don’t already know each other and may be living in different circles. When we know each other, we care for each other. When everyone feels cared for, they show love and respect in return.”
As St. Marys emerges from the pandemic, the CDSW’s focus will evolve. Within the town, UWPH’s St. Marys Community Committee is committed to raising funds for this new position, along with the 18 current programs and services supported by UWPH in St. Marys — including the NOURISH Equal Access Food Market.
“To fund this program and other services already in place, the St. Marys UWPH Community Committee needs to raise $127,000 by March 31st, 2021,” said Rob Edney, who is co-chairing the campaign in St. Marys with his wife Leslie. “A matching program is in place — anyone who gives $1,200 for the first time will see their donation doubled. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and giving is easy. Mail a cheque to United Way or head to perthhuron.unitedway.ca. Donations from St. Marys stay in St. Marys.”
