Zurich’s First Living Wage Employer: Hay Communications Cooperative

Hay Communications Cooperative are celebrating a wonderful local achievement. They are Zurich’s first business to certify as a Living Wage Employer in the champion category.

“When we say we will strive to be socially responsible, we mean it. Hay is a Cooperative. Our structure and working business goals uphold those values,” says Angela Lawrence, General Manager of Hay Communications Cooperative. “We consider this a direct investment in the health of our employees, and in the communities where we operate. It’s a win-win for the community. Not only does paying a living wage fit into our cooperative way of thinking, it completes a positive circle of LOCAL spending. This is good for locals and businesses. It’s a very good trend”

Now calculated annually by the United Way Perth-Huron’s Social Research and Planning Council, the Living Wage is a calculation based on the living expenses of a family of four with both adults working full-time for 35 hours a week, once government transfers and deductions are taken into account. Everyday expenses included in the calculation are food, housing, utilities, childcare and transportation. Perth-Huron Counties’ Living Wage is $17.55 per hour. More information about Perth-Huron’s Living Wage can be found HERE.

“Hay Communications Cooperative is taking a wonderful step forward in improving the overall quality of life in our communities,” says United Way Perth-Huron Executive Director Ryan Erb. “The Living Wage helps us understand how hard it is for regular, everyday working people to make ends meet. The conversation around it helps to engage employers with the challenge their workers face, while recognizing the challenge that employers have to be profitable.”
