Staff from United Way and the County of Huron celebrate their Living Wage certification

County of Huron Becomes Third Living Wage Certified Municipality

The County of Huron is the third municipality in Ontario to certify as a Living Wage employer at the Supporter level through the Ontario Living Wage Network and the United Way Perth-Huron’s Social Research and Planning Council.

“I am thrilled that we can join others in our area by becoming certified as a Living Wage employer,” says Meighan Wark, CAO of the County of Huron. “At the County of Huron, we believe that paying a Living Wage is a very important movement to help lift families out of poverty and provide a basic level of economic security. Our commitment to providing a Living Wage for our employees is a step in the right direction.”

Calculated annually by the United Way Perth-Huron’s Social Research and Planning Council, the Living Wage is a calculation based on the living expenses of a family of four with both adults working full-time for 35 hours a week, once government transfers and deductions are taken into account. Everyday expenses included in the calculation are food, housing, utilities, childcare and transportation. Perth-Huron Counties’ Living Wage is $17.55 per hour. “If a municipality is paying a Living Wage, it matters,” says United Way Perth-Huron Executive Director Ryan Erb. “It is particularly helpful for municipalities to become certified because they are recognized as leaders. Certified Living Wage employers, like the County of Huron, draws attention to the Living Wage conversation in our communities. The conversation is about building stronger and healthier communities and encouraging economic prosperity for everyone. We are excited to welcome the County of Huron to the Living Wage movement.”
