United Way Perth-Huron Awards Youth in Action Grants

United Way Perth-Huron has awarded two Youth Grants for 2016-2017.  The purpose of the youth grants is to assist young leaders in addressing issues that are important to them and their community. Projects must have a lead youth applicant (age 14-25) and an adult trustee to assist in the stewardship of funds.

The Active Minds at South Huron, has a goal to erase the stigma constantly present at South Huron District High School.  Mental Health had been relatively ignored until the death of a student from mental illness last September.  The grant money of $900.00 awarded from United Way Perth-Huron will bring Mental Health Awareness speakers to the school and conduct activities and events to help break the stigma. Students and staff will also be taught proper mental health awareness, and healthy ways to maintain mental health.

South Huron Nerd Nights, is a regular event hosted by The Cultural Collective.  The Collective started in January 2016 and has been holding regular events in a studio space in Exeter, however they would like to expand to the nearby community of Huron Park.  Nerd Night is an evening where youth and community members can play board games and socialize and have fun in a safe, public environment.  The Nerd Night takes place very two weeks and is open to the public for free.  Funding of $1,000.00 from United Way Perth-Huron will be used to expand the South Huron Nerd Nights to Huron Park, and continue to ensure the event is free and accessible to all.

United Way of Perth-Huron helps Children and Youth reach their full potential.  Working toward ensuring that all children and youth experience positive mental health, well-being and feel involved with a sense of belonging in their community.
