Access to Healthy Food is everyone’s right.
This fall I’ve proudly stated “Access to Healthy Food is everyone’s right”. My sentiment was loudly endorsed by community members at our Kick Off lunch and our annual Rotary presentation, where we shared, over a healthy meal, about the struggles many in our community face. The issue of food security is a complex one; many in Perth and Huron cannot afford, or do not have the skills needed to eat a healthy meal. Food banks, and food distribution centres work hard to provide food for many in our community. This is to be commended. But there is more to be done. We must work at root causes, support people facing under-employment, unemployment, mental health, and other challenges while providing them with access to healthy food and training to cook healthy food. UWPH is proud to support the Huron County Food Distribution Centre and the Local Community Food Centre as part of this community development work and my challenge to all of us, is, not only give during the next community food drive, but to go the next step and support a neighbour, or volunteer at an agency, so we can walk along-side the people of our community supporting where change is possible.
